Department of Environmental toxicology

The Department of the Environmental Toxicology is located in the area of Olsztyn called Kortowo, at 17 Prawocheńskiego Street. It occupies rooms on the first and second floor of the building.

Department of Environmental Toxicology was established on February 1, 2012 by the Rector’s Directive no 3/2012 and Resolution no 849 of the Senate of the University of Warmia and Mazury of 27 January 2012. The new department originated from the Department of Air Protection and Environmental Toxicology. The head of the department is Professor Barbara Adomas.

The origin of the department goes back to the Institute of Applied Agricultural Chemistry, the Institute of Plant Protection and the Institute of Aerial Application of Chemicals in Agriculture.

The Institute of Applied Agricultural Chemistry was set up in 1970. It included the Unit of Biological Consequence of Chemical Treatments in Agriculture, later transformed into the Unit of Toxicological Chemistry and Plant Protection Techniques (the Institute of Plant Protection), which employed professor Zdzisław Przeździecki, professor Halina Kozaczenko, doctor Danuta Murawa, doctor Tadeusz Banaszkiewicz and Barbara Adomas, MSc, and others.

In 1973, the Institute of Plant Protection was set up at the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn. In 1973-1981 it was headed by Professor Zdzisław Przeździecki (as the director in 1973-1978 and deputy director in 1978-1981).

In 1983, the Institute was transformed into the Department of Plant Protection, headed by Professor Janina Mikołajska, followed by Professor Halina Kozaczenko and, since 1997 by doctor Danuta Murawa.

The Institute of Aerial Application of Chemicals in Agriculture was set up on March 14, 1997, as an interfaculty unit at the Faculty of Agriculture. Dr. Leszek Rogalski became one of its directors. In 1983, it was named the Center of Aerial Application, and since 1987 it functioned as the Unit of Aerial Application at the Department of Plant Protection, the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn. Later, it was transformed into the Unit of Plant Protection Techniques while the Unit of Plant Protection Methods was replaced by the Unit of Environmental Toxicology.

In 2000 another reorganization divided the Department of Plant Protection into the Department of Air Protection and Environmental Toxicology and the Department of Phytopathology and Entomology.

From 2000 to 2011 the Department of Air Protection and Environmental Toxicology was headed by professor Leszek Rogalski.
