Współczesne oblicza dawnego sporu

Dawno już minęły czasy, gdy teologia określana była jako królowa nauk, chociaż gdy w okresie średniowiecza tworzono pierwsze uniwersytety, zajmowała ona wraz z filozofią, medycyną i prawem jedno z czołowym miejsc w akademickim curriculum. Teologiczne spojrzenie na rzeczywistość i odpowiedzi na fundamentalne ludzkie pytania, jakie usiłuje się sformułować na gruncie teologii, zdają się należeć już do przeszłości i nie wytrzymywać konfrontacji z postępem ludzkiej wiedzy. Do współczesnych odsłon tytułowego sporu należą kontrowersje dotyczące samej naukowości teologii, których rezultatem jest wypchnięcie jej – nierzadko wraz z innymi obszarami humanistyki – poza nawias nauk w ścisłym znaczeniu tego słowa. Głębsza refleksja pokazuje jednak, że takie podejście jest nie tylko nieuzasadnione, ale poważnie zubaża i zacieśnia refleksję naukową.
Konferencja ma na celu podjęcie refleksji i dyskusję między przedstawicielami teologii, filozofii i nauk przyrodniczych dotyczącą następujących kręgów tematycznych:
– racjonalność wiary/religii w kontekście innych rodzajów racjonalności;
– status naukowy teologii w kontekście współczesnej typologii dziedzin i dyscyplin naukowych;
– metodologiczne granice teologii/filozofii i nauk przyrodniczych;
– wkład teologii i nauki w dyskusji o pochodzeniu i kształcie świata;
– teologia i nauka w sporze o pochodzenie człowieka i ludzką naturę;
– historyczne aspekty debaty między nauką a teologią;
– miejsce wiary religijnej w samoświadomości i pracy badawczej przedstawiciela świata nauki;
Obok debat nad tytułowym zagadnieniem między przedstawicielami teologii, filozofii i nauk przyrodniczych, przewidujemy także sesję poświęconą odręcznym notatkom Kopernika zawartym na marginesach inkunabułów i starodruków, znajdujących się w zbiorach Biblioteki Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego Metropolii Warmińskiej „Hosianum” w Olsztynie.

Science vs. theology.
Contemporary faces of an old dispute

Long gone are the days when theology was described as the queen of sciences, although when the first universities were established in the Middle Ages, it occupied one of the leading places in the academic curriculum, along with philosophy, medicine and law. The theological view of reality and the answers to fundamental human questions, which are attempted to be formulated on the basis of theology, seem to be a thing of the past and cannot stand up to the progress of human knowledge. Among the contemporary manifestations of the title dispute is the controversy over the very scientific nature of theology, which has the effect of pushing it – often together with other areas of the humanities – outside the bracket of the sciences in the strict sense of the word. Deeper reflection, however, shows that such an approach is not only unjustified, but seriously impoverishes and tightens scientific reflection.
The conference aims to engage in reflection and discussion between representatives of theology, philosophy and the natural sciences on the following thematic circles:
– the rationality of faith/religion in the context of other types of rationality;
– the scientific status of theology in the context of the contemporary typology of scientific fields and disciplines;
– methodological boundaries of theology/philosophy and the natural sciences;
– the contribution of theology and science to the discussion on the origin and shape of the world;
– theology and science in the dispute over the origin of man and human nature;
– historical aspects of the debate between science and theology;
– the place of religious faith in the self-awareness and research work of a representative of the scientific world;
In addition to debates on the title question between specialists in theology, philosophy and the natural sciences, we are also planning a session devoted to Copernicus’ handwritten notes on the margins of incunabula and old prints held in the collection of the Library of the Warmia Metropolitan Seminary ‚Hosianum’ in Olsztyn.
