BA/MA Seminar: Dictionaries

Dr Bartosz Ptasznik

The BA/MA seminar focuses on the five major English monolingual learners' dictionaries on the market: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary and Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's Dictionary. The features of these dictionaries will be meticulously discussed in class and students will learn how to use the print and online versions of the dictionaries. Also, students will be asked to read a number of studies related to the field of dictionary use. The methods applied by various dictionary use researchers and the study findings will be closely analyzed in class. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with other types of dictionaries: bilingual learner's dictionaries (Longman Słownik Współczesny), bilingualized dictionaries (Oxford Wordpower) or The New Kościuszko Foundation Dictionary. Last but not least, there will be classes devoted to: (1) academic writing; (2) writing a summary; (3) reading academic texts. Possible BA/MA projects may be related to the following topics: effectiveness of sense navigation devices in English monolingual learners' dictionaries, presentation and use of grammatical information in dictionaries, reception and production skills in the context of dictionary use, online dictionaries (either free or paid versions), collocations in dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, types of definitions, example sentences, comparison of dictionary features in English monolingual learners' dictionaries, front and back matter in dictionaries, questionnaires in dictionary use and other topics devoted to dictionaries.
