Scientific achievements

The using of cytogenetic features in the systematics of animals, especially fish from the order Cypriniformes; the description of the karyotypes and chromosomes banding patterns as well as selected molecular cytogenetic features of the species from the following genera: Phoxinus, Eupallasella, Leuciscus, Carassius, Sabanejewia, Misgurnus, Barbatula and Tinca, and others

Comprehensive comparative cytogenetic studies of selected taxa of Cobitisfrom populations distributed in Poland, and identification and description for the first time a new species in the polish fauna – the danubian loach Cobitis elongatoides Bacescu & Maier, 1969, and several hybrid polyploid forms (biotypes) of Cobitis loaches

Confirmation the dominance triploid hybrid females in most Cobitis populations in Poland and documenting that this dominance may be resulted from both the mode of reproduction and some features of their biology (longer spawning time and lifespan etc.)

Demonstrating, based on cytogenetic features that both C. taenia and C. elongatoides took part in the formation of most of polyploid hybrids Cobitis occurring in Poland, and confirmation that two rounds of hybridization processes leading to the formation of Cobitis polyploids

Evidenced the diversity of the number and location of 28S rDNA and 5S rDNA in the chromosomes of many Cobitis and other diploid and polyploid Cypriniformes taxa

Documenting that the triploid Cobitis females from diploid-polyploid populations and diploid C. taenia males at least in an experimental conditions give triploid as well as tetraploid offspring

Documenting experimentally that oocytes produced by triploid hybrid Cobitis females may develop gynogenetically, but about 66% of them may be fertilized giving rise to tetraploid individuals.

International cooperation

Cytogenetic/genetic and reproductive studies of polyploid taxa of Teleostei, including cytological mechanisms of the meiotic process - cooperation with Professor Katsutoshi Arai, Chair of Aquaculture and Genomics, Division of Marine Life Science, Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, and with Professor Syuiti Abe, Division of Marine Life Science, Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University, Japan.

The processes for the formation of clonal sex fish are conducted in cooperation with a team of Karel Janko of the Czech Academy of Sciences, recently in the framework of the project "Roads to unisexuality: mechanisms initiating parthenogenesis in fish" (2014-2015), Polish-Czech Executive Programme under the Agreement between the Government of the Polish Republic and the Government of the Czech Republic on cooperation in the field of science and technology of 13 January 2000.

Research in national cooperation

The reproductive potential of diploid and tetraploid males of Cobitis are conducted in collaboration with the researchers from the Institute of Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn and from the Jagiellonian University

Key publications and projects

The vast majority of the publications apply to classical and molecular cytogenetics and reproductive biology, including reproduction mode of diploid and polyploid taxa of Cypriniformes, and in the last years the experimental techniques of reproduction; inducing hybridization and the reproduction process of allopolyploid hybrids. Use biotechnologies in aquaculture aims to increase production efficiency, product quality, increase resistance to disease and adverse environmental conditions, but also increasingly being used to protect endangered species (e.g., loach C. taenia) and maintain the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems

Research projects (the last two listed below) relate to biotechnology - the reproduction processes of fish; inducing reproduction of naturally occurring triploid females, leading to gynogenetic (triploid) and sexual (tetraploid) progeny of Cobitis loaches. Scientific achievements for a large formation and functioning of polyploid organisms, model to know the functioning of individuals, tissues and cells of the multiple genome also excellent for treatment of biotechnology (gynogenesis, polyploidization), which recently successfully include in both of the following grants;

"Reproduction of natural triploid Cobitis (Pisces, Cobitidae) in mixed diploid-polyploid populations" N N303 068834 Higher Education; 2008-2012.

"The potential reproductive of diploid and tetraploid male Cobitis fish (Pisces, Cobitidae)", 2012-2015. no. 173069 NCN.
