The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000.

For the past three years the Fellowships have been open to eligible researchers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. From 2010 researchers in Croatia will also be eligible.

Applications for 2010 European Fellowships will open in August 2009.

You are eligible to apply to be a Fellow if you:
a) have completed a PhD less than five years prior to application for the Fellowship;
b) are under 40 years of age at the time of application;
c) are a citizen of one of the designated countries listed above;
d) reside in one of the designated countries listed above (it need not be the same country as your citizenship);
e) have been employed (minimum half-time appointment) for at least six months prior to application by a university or research organisation (public or private) in one of the designated countries;
f) have sufficient competency in English to be able to adequately communicate with researchers in their host university;
g) are eligible to obtain an Australian Visiting Academic Visa (subclass 419) or equivalent Australian visa.

2009 Go8 European Fellowships - results:

Dr Martin Balog from the Slovak Academy of Sciences will undertake his fellowship at the University of Queensland's School of Engineering where he will conduct research into the microstructures of light alloys.

Dr Klaudia Anna Borowiak from the Poznan University of Life Sciences in Poland will look at the effects of drought on deciduous and evergreen tree species during her fellowship at the University of Melbourne's School of Land and Environment.

Dr Malgorzata Kotula-Balak from Jagiellonian University in Poland will undertake her fellowship at the University of Adelaide's School of Molecular and Biomedical Science where she will look at the relationship between testicular dysgenesis and Leydig cells.

Dr Arkadiusz Lach from the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Poland will look at the Australian model of criminal justice and the role of privacy in criminal proceedings during his fellowship at the Australian National University's Regulatory Institutions Network.

Dr Andrei Miu from Babes-Bolyai University in Romania will undertake his fellowship at the University of Western Australia's Department of Psychology where he will look at anxiety disorders.

Dr Iva Strnadova from Charles University in the Czech Republic will investigate the quality of life of aging women with intellectual disabilities during her fellowship at the University of Sydney's Department of Education and Social Work.

Dr Zofia Wodniecka from Jagiellonian University in Poland will undertake her fellowship at the University of New South Wales' Department of Psychology where she will look at the cognitive benefits of bilingualism.

Dr Katarzyna Zawalinska from the Polish Academy of Sciences will undertake her fellowship at Monash University's Centre of Policy Studies where she will analyse the Common Agricultural Policy – an EU funding initiative considered detrimental to Australia’s economic interests.

Dr Zuzanna Bulat Silva from the University of Wroclaw in Poland will undertake her fellowship at the Australian National University where she will look at linguistic phenomena. The fellowship is funded by the Australian National University.
