DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS, PLANT BREEDING AND Bioresource Engineering
DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS, PLANT BREEDING AND BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING
HISTORY
EDITED BY DR INŻ. PAWEŁ SULIMA
The Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production was established in 1951 as an organizational unit of the then Faculty of Agriculture at the Higher School of Agriculture in Olsztyn. Lectures on genetics and plant breeding were then conducted by doc. dr hab. Antoni Filutowicz from IHAR in Bydgoszcz, and lectures from agricultural experimentation led by mgr. Bohdan Szychulski. In 1953, the menagement of the Department became doc. dr Zygmunt Tomaszewski (in the picture below). In 1970, in connection with the reorganization of the higher school, the Institute of Plant Breeding and Seed Production is established. In 1972, the Higher School of Agriculture was transformed into the Academy of Agriculture and Technology. Until 1976, the Institute was headed by prof. dr. Zygmunt Tomaszewski.

In 1976, the head of the Institute and then of the Department was prof. dr hab. Krystyna Kusiorska (in the picture below). In 1984, the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production included the Seed and Genetics Facility and the Plant Breeding and Experimental Facility. In 1992, the head of the Department was appointed prof. dr hab. Irena Koczowska (in the picture below).

In 2001, as part of internal restructuring, the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture abandoned the division of Departments into Facilities. Since 2002, the head of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production is prof. dr hab. Józef Tworkowski (in the picture below). Currently, in the Department are working 6 professors, 6 adjuncts, 5 engineering and technical staff and 6 PhD students.

RESEARCH
EDITED BY PROF. DR HAB. JÓZEF TWORKOWSKI
Current research directions implemented in the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production:

 - breeding and assessment of the response of selected Triticum spelta genotypes to infection with pathogens of the genus Fusarium
 - collecting, breeding and assessing the suitability of Salix spp. plants for energy and herbal purposes
 - willow cultivation technologies
 - the use of molecular markers in breeding and selection of efficient energy plant genotypes
 - in vitro micropropagation of plants
 - application of computer image color analysis and computer shape analysis to assess plant health
 - estimating and eliminating the effects of spatial variability in field experiments with legumes
 - refining seed materials, improving methods of seed production of alternative plants

DIDACTICS
EDITED BY DR HAB. JACEK KWIATKOWSKI
A total of 37 subjects for full-time and part-time studies of the first and second degree programs, including 25 subjects for the first and 12 subjects for the second degree are completed at the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production.

A group of academic teachers consisting of 12 people (including 10 professors and  doctors habilitatus) consists of four teaching teams:

 - Plant genetics and biotechnology team;
 - Plant breeding team;
 - Seed production and energy crops team;
 - Statistics and experimenting team.

The individual teams conduct lectures and classes of objects typically associated with the team characteristics, as well as complementary in the pursuit of teaching carried out by other Depatrtments teams and other outsides teams.

Agriculture and Horticulture students have the opportunity to choose the implementation of our engineering and master's thesis in our Department in the field of plant genetics and biotechnology, plant breeding, seed production, agricultural and horticultural experimentation and in the field of plant energy resources. Specialist education in the form of seminars and field classes is conducted with the participation of these students.
