Guidelines for Authors on Preparing and Submitting Contributions to the Echa Przeszłości (Echoes of the Past) Journal

  1. Hard copies

1.1.    Each volume of the Echa Przeszłości (Echoes of the Past) Journal consists of the following sections: Articles and Dissertations, Documents and Materials, Problems and Discussions, Debates, Reviews and Overviews, Academic Chronicle, and Farewells.

1.2.    Authors should submit the following to the Editorial Office of Echa Przeszłości (Institute of History and International Relations, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Kurta Obitza 1, 10-725 Olsztyn, Poland):

-          a hard copy of the complete manuscript (including footnotes), preferably in MS Word format – a single-sided printout, A-4 size, and electronic files of the complete manuscript on a CD-R or USB memory stick (flash drive). The body of the text should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, with 1.5 line spacing. The footnotes should be in Times New Roman, 10 pt. font. The top and bottom margins should be set at 25 mm, and the left margins at 35 mm. Authors are asked to keep formatting to a minimum: indents, italics, full justification. The length of papers and dissertations should not exceed 30 printed pages (30 lines per page, approx. 60 characters per line), and the length of reviews and overviews should not exceed 5 printed pages;

-          Abstract in Polish (not to exceed half the page)

-          the author’s name (first name and last name) and affiliation should be provided on the first page, in the upper left corner.

1.3.    Reviewed manuscripts, dissertations and materials, and the reviewers’ reports are returned to the authors for revision. Each referee comment must be addressed with a description of the modifications made. The authors should return both the original and revised manuscript (a hard copy and a CD-R or USB memory stick), and the reviewers’ reports.

1.4.    It is journal policy to accept only high-quality original research papers that have not been published elsewhere. We do not return materials unless specifically requested.

  1. Abbreviations that are generally accepted should be used (e.g., etc,. i.a., c. for century). Other abbreviations may also be used if necessary.

2.1. In the reviews, the full name of the author of the reviewed work should be followed by the title and subtitle; for joint publications, provide the editor’s name; for multi-volume works, provide the number of volumes; indicate the publisher’s name, place and year of publication, number of pages, figures and maps. The reviewer’s name should be provided on the right side of the page, at the bottom of the text.

  1. Footnotes

3.1.    Footnotes are to be placed numerically at the bottom of the page where direct references are made, using continuous numbering. In the main text, the superscript numbers are to be placed before the punctuation marks in the phrase or clause the note is in reference to (i.e. before the period at the end of a sentence, except when the period ending an abbreviation comes at the end of a sentence, e.g. c. for century, and before the comma in a sentence). Abbreviations that are generally accepted should be used. Non-standard and specialized abbreviations can also be used as long as they are explained at first occurrence. The titles of journals, periodicals and series should be italicized (do not use inverted commas). The title of a work in an anthology should be followed by a comma and in: (do not use square brackets). Use Arabic numerals for volumes of periodicals, annals, issue numbers and other serial publications.

3.2.    For a book, the bibliographic details must include: the initial of the author’s/authors’ first name(s), the author’s/authors’ last name(s), written without a space, title, subtitle (separated by a period), edition, place of publication, year of publication, page number(s). Italicize book title (do not use inverted commas).

3.3.    Ibidem (non-italicized) should be used to indicate that the note refers to the same source as the preceding note. If the source is the same but the page number is different, Ibidem should be followed by the new page number. Use the initial of the author’s first name and the author’s last name, op. cit., p….. to refer to a full citation given in a previous footnote. Use Idem, followed by the title or abbreviated title, p…. to replaces the name of a repeated author in the same footnote.

3.4.    To cite a source with no place or year of publication, use [n.p.] to indicate that no place of publication is given and [n.y.] to indicate that no year of publication is given.

4. The materials submitted to the Editorial Office can be made available as on-line content.
