2016

  • Prof. Norbert Kasparek of the Faculty of Humanities was one of the prize-winners in the contest, organised by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites, for the best historical book for “Badania archeologiczne na Reducie Ordona” [“Archaeological Studies at Ordon’s Redoubt”].
  • Prof. Jan Kiciński of the Department of Mechanics and Rudiments of Machine Construction at the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the UWM won the Green Phoenix 2015 award in the research category for scientific research achievements in eco-energy generation.
  • Dr hab. Beata Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz, professor at UWM, head of the Department of Development Psychology and Education, became a member of the Executive Committee of the Management Board of the Polish Psychological Association for the 2016-2018 term.
  • Dr hab. of veterinary sciences, Mariusz Skowroński of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of the UWM, became a member of the National Ethics Committee for Animal Experiments.
  • Dr Anna Snarska of the Department of Internal Medicine, with the Teaching Hospital for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, was voted the best academic teacher at the UWM for the year 2015.
  • Prof. Benedykt Błoński, dean of the Faculty of Arts of the UWM, was given the Statuette of St. James, which is a major distinction granted in Olsztyn.
  • Karol Zalewski, a runner of the AZS UWM sports club, the best Polish sprinter, was 7th in the 55th annual poll to choose the best athlete in Warmia and Mazury.
  • Dr hab. Danuta Kruk, professor at UWM, of the Department of Relativist Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, was voted the Woman of Success in Warmia and Mazury for the year 2015. With her in the group of prize-winners was also Dr hab. Iwona Anna Ndiaye of the Faculty of Humanities.
  • A new housing initiative has been put forward at the University. Construction of 6 buildings is planned with a total of 220 flats.
  • The University of Warmia and Mazury was granted a “Socially Responsible University” certificate by the Fundacja DKMS Baza Dawców Komórek Macierzystych Polska [DKMS Stem Cell Donor Database Foundation].
  • Dr Beata Płoszaj-Witkowska of the Department of Horticulture at the Faculty of Landscape Engineering and Agriculture, bred, and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in London, the first plant bred at the UWM. It is a lily by the name of Queen of Kortowo.
  • Prof. Ryszard Górecki was re-elected as Rector of the UWM. He will occupy the post during the 2016-20 term. Elections of deans were also held.
  • Prof. Mirosław Krzemieniewski, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the UWM was granted the title of the Personality of the Year in Warmia and Mazury 2015. He was distinguished by the Warmia and Mazury Business Club for modern technologies of wastewater treatment.
  • The Faculty of Medical Sciences is now entitled to grant the scientific degree of doctor habilitated in medical sciences.
  • Five study majors at the UWM received certificates of the Foundation for Development of Science and Higher Education for the quality and innovativeness of education.
  • Three students of the Institute of Music of the Faculty of Arts: Agnieszka Kowalik, Żaneta Kucharska and Anna Przegrocka, won prizes at the Meeting of Young Choirmasters – part of the University Forum of Conductors of the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz.
  • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UWM and Dr Tomasz Waśniewski of the Faculty of Medical sciences were among those distinguished by the Marshal of the Voivodship with the Laurels of “To the Best among the Best”.
  • Dr Tomasz Waśniewski, lecturer at the Department of Gynaecology, Gynaecological Endocrinology and Obstetrics of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UWM, was voted the Olsztyn Citizen of the Year in a plebiscite organised by the “Gazety Wyborcza” newspaper.
  • The AZS Sports Club at the University of Warmia and Mazury was again the best youth sports club in Warmia and Mazury in 2015.
  • A team of surgeons carried out 4 experimental surgeries of implanting stimulators to coma patients at the University Teaching Hospital. Those were the first surgeries of this kind in Poland.
  • Prof. Wojciech Budzyński of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering received the title of doctor honoris causa of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań.
  • The Emil Behring Centre for Experimental Medicine was opened in the University Teaching Hospital in Olsztyn on 8 August.
  • Adam Froń and Kacper Kotulak, doctoral students of the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management of the UWM, won the Young Scientist Award
  • The first thirteen graduates of English language studies at the Medical major received certificates that they have completed the study syllabus (“absolutorium”).
  • The University sports club was represented by three athletes at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: Joanna Zachoszcz - swimming, Kacper Kowski and Karol Zalewski - sprinting.

2015

  • On the 1 January 2015, the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management took over from the Faculty of Technical Sciences the education in the faculties related to civil engineering and changed its name to the Faculty of Geodesy, Geospatial and Civil Engineering.
  • As many as 25 students of UWM received scholarships granted by the Minister of Science and Higher Education for outstanding learning achievements. This is the best result since 7 years.
  • Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, received the St. Jacob award in the category of science.
  • Prof. Andrzej Krankowski and the Song and Dance Ensemble “Kortowo” received from the Warmia and Mazury Business Club the title of the Personality of the year 2014 of Warmia and Mazury.
  • Dr hab. Iwona Anna Ndiaye, from the Institute of Eastern Slavic Studies, received the aFrykasy award in the field of science granted by the Foundation “Africa Another Way” [Fundacja Afryka Inaczej].
  • The Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology received the entitlements to confer doctoral degrees in biotechnology. As the only university faculty in Poland, it also received an outstanding institutional evaluation – the highest rating awarded by the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA).
  • Prof. Stanisław Czachorowski from the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology was among the winners of the Golden Man plebiscite [plebiscyt Złoty Człowiek] organized by Gazeta Olsztyńska and Dziennik Elbląski.
  • Dr hab. Krzysztof Szatrawski became a member of the Monitoring Committee of the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development for the years 2014-2020.
  • Professor Andrzej Kukwa from the Faculty of Medical Sciences won the award “Best of the Best” in the category science and health care.
  • Dr. Stanisław Drozda from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science became the winner of the competition for the best academic teacher.
  • Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, was honoured with the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity awarded for extraordinary merits for the independence and sovereignty of Poland.
  • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became part of the Scientific Consortium “Healthy animals – safe food”, which received the status of the National Scientific Leadership Centre [Krajowy Naukowy Ośrodek Wiodący – KNOW]. It is the first faculty of UWM, which was placed in a consortium with the KNOW status.
  • Professor Wojciech Maksymowicz – Dean of the UWM’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Dr inż. Aleksander Socha – UWM’s Chancellor – were awarded by the Polish President. The first person received the Officer’s Cross of the Oder of Polonia Restituta, and the second – the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
  • Dr. Bożena Chrostowska, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Education, became the Olsztyn citizen of the year 2014 in a plebiscite conducted by Gazeta Wyborcza.
  • Prof. Ryszard Górecki, Rector of UWM, received the Medal of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship for his contribution to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship and its residents.
  • The „Model agro-energy complexes” project received the prestigious World Energy Prize of the Austrian Energy Globe Foundation. Its head is Prof. Jan Kiciński from the UWM’s Department of Mechanics and Machine Design at the Faculty of Technical Sciences.
  • UWM launched the Poland’s first radio astronomy station belonging to the LOFAR European system. The radio telescope will provide the scientists with information from the farthest corners of the Universe.
  • UWM’s Faculty of Food Sciences launched a modern Centre of Gastronomy with Dietetics and Food Bio-assessment – the only such research centre in Poland.
  • The Faculty of Economic Sciences received the entitlements to confer PhD degree in the discipline of economics.
  • Prof. Dr hab. Marzena Zaorska from the department of Special Education at the Faculty of Social Sciences, a typhlo-teacher, as the only such specialist in Poland, was awarded the Ukrainian Medal of N.I. Pilman.
  • Four young scientists from UWM were among the 180 winners of the fourth edition of the Top 500 Innovators: Dr inż. Marek Aljewicz (Department of Dairy Science and Quality Management, Faculty of Food Sciences), Dr inż. Joanna Kuczyńska-Siehień (Department of Land Surveying and Geomatics, Faculty of Geodesy, Geospatial and Civil Engineering), Dr inż. Michał Krzyżaniak (Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production, Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture), Dr inż. Justyna Możejko (Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology). They have completed internships at leading research centre in the world.
  • Ania Surawska – second-year student of Economics at the undergraduate level won a nationwide student’s contest “Karierosfera”.
  • Graduates of Medicine at UWM took 1st place in Poland at the Medical Final Exam. The exam was attended by graduates of 12 medical schools.
  • The Faculty of Geodesy, Geospatial and Civil Engineering was promoted, and as the only geodetic faculty in Poland received the A scientific category.
  • The Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA) granted the Fisheries Department at the UWM’s Faculty of Environmental Sciences an outstanding program evaluation.
  • UWM has won second place in the category of institution in the national competition “Icebreakers” [“Lodołamacze”]. The competition aims i.a. at overcoming stereotypes related to the employment of people with disabilities and creating the opportunity for them to fully participate in life.
  • Dr hab. Marcin Wawruk, Prof. of UWM and Prof. Dr hab. Artur Milian were among the winners who received the Pegasus statuettes for their contribution to the culture of Warmia and Mazury.
  • The readers of Gazeta Olsztyńska and Dziennik Elbląski have recognized the University of Warmia and Mazury as an investment for the 25th anniversary.
  • Mgr inż. Dariusz Tanajewski and mgr inż. Grzegorz Grunwald – doctoral students from the UWM’s Department of Satellite Geodesy and Navigation received a special prize in the competition organized by the German space agency – DLR.
  • Rector of UWM – Prof. Ryszard Górecki – was the winner of the prestigious competition Lumen 2015. He received the award in the most important category: the leader of university management.
  • Prof. Janusz Połom – camera operator, photographer, director, lecturer of the Faculty of Art at the University of Warmia and Mazury received from the Mayor of Olsztyn the Hieronim Skorupski Prize in fine arts.
  • The pharmacokinetic laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine received a certificate of Good Laboratory Practice, confirming the fact of meeting the highest European quality standards of pharmacokinetic studies.

2014

  • The University of Warmia and Mazury, together with Saint-Petersburg State University of Economics, will act as the Secretariat of the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN) for the next three years.
  • The Faculty of Medical Sciences received St. Jacob’s Award in the category of science from  the President of Olsztyn.
  • The Faculty of Fine Arts opened an Exhibition Centre in “Stara Kotłownia” [Eng. The Old Boiler House]. It is the third prestigious art gallery in Olsztyn.
  • The establishment of UWM was chosen as “The most significant event of the last 25 years” by a popular vote among readers of Gazeta Wyborcza Newspaper. The Rector of UWM, Prof. Ryszard Górecki, was selected as the most important person of the last quarter of a century.
  • The Faculty of Medical Sciences was included on the list of medical centres accredited in the USA.
  • Dr hab. Jadwiga Snarska, UWM associate professor,  the head of the Chair of Surgery at the Faculty of Medical Sciences was chosen by a popular vote as “the most successful woman of Warmia and Mazury”.
  • Prof. Ryszard Górecki was awarded the Primate’s Medal for “The Service to the Church and the Nation”.
  • Senior Archbishop, Dr Rev. Edmund Piszcz received the title of an Honorary Doctor of the University of Warmia and Mazury.
  • Deans of Faculties of Fine Arts discussed problematic issues in Kortowo. It was the first Polish conference of scholars representing this branch of studies.
  • Dr hab. Zofia Pieresławcew, UWM associate professor, identified Nicolaus Copernicus’ notes in the Incunabula of the Hosianum library.
  • According to the ranking of Perspektywy magazine, in general classification of all institutes of higher education in Poland, UWM was ranked 33rd, while in the category of universities, it was 11th.
  • In youth sports ranking that comprised 3329 clubs in Poland, Sports Club AZS UWM was ranked 10th, and among Polish universities it took the 1st position.
  • Dr hab. Joanna Ostrouch-Kamińska, UWM associate professor, working at the Chair of General Pedagogy at the Faculty of Social Sciences, was appointed the chairwoman of Polish Pedagogical Association for the term 2014-17.
  • The Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture was marked with Class A in the classification of Polish scientific institutions.
  • After six years of studying, the first group of Medicine students (49) graduated from UWM. Physicians Final Exam was successfully passed by 96% of them, which placed UWM as the second best university in Poland in terms of the pass rate.
  • The Senate of Lublin University of Technology awarded the title of an Honorary Professor to Prof. Ewa Klimiuk from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, UWM.
  • A project titled “Centre for Environmental Research and Innovative Food Technology for the Quality of Life”carried out at UWM faculties was included in so-called Polish Roadmap of Scientific Infrastructure, which is a consortium of  a national structure.
  • The Rector of UWM, Prof. Ryszard Górecki, was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star – one of the most important Japanese decorations.
  • An article by Lech Kryszałowicz, the editor-in-chief of Wiadomości Uniwersyteckie Online Newspaper won a contest for the most interesting article promoting science in Poland. The editorial staff of the newspaper obtained the only award of distinction for their exceptional approach to scientific issues.
  • Prof. Janusz Piechocki, the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs at UWM, was appointed an Honorary Vice-President of International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR).
  • Volleyball players from AZS UWM won the National Championships of Academic Sports Associations.
  • “A Parent-Friendly University” – such a title was awarded to UWM by PLinEU European Advisors Association from Cracow, a non-governmental organization that supports the idea of life and work balance.
  • Prof. Winfried Lieber, the Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, was awarded the title of an Honorary Doctor of UWM.
  • Prof. Ryszard Górecki, the Rector of UWM, and Prof. Winfried Lieber, the Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, signed an agreement concerning the establishment of another mutual branch of study – Food Engineering.

 2013

  • Prof. Bogusław Staniewski, the Dean of the Faculty of Food Sciences, was included among the laureates of the 10th edition of St. Jacob’s Awards in the category of science.
  • The Faculty of Technical Sciences received a brand-new traffic laboratory.
  • As the only faculty in Poland, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine obtained European accreditation.
  • Dr Jan Połowianiuk, a conductor and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts UWM, was awarded the Feliks Nowowiejski’s Prize of the President of Olsztyn for the year 2012 in the category of musical arts.
  • Prof. Wojciech Budzyński from the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture was appointed the chairman of the Division Three of Biological, Agricultural, Forest and Veterinary Sciences of the Central Commission for Scientific Degrees and Titles.
  • Dr hab. Andrzej Buszko the head of the Chair of Banking and Finance at the Faculty of Economics was awarded the title of an Honorary Doctor of the Tajik State University of Commerce in Dushanbe – the capital of Tajikistan.
  • Prof. Christian von Bar from the University in Osnabrück, Germany, received the title of an Honorary Doctor of the University of Warmia and Mazury.
  • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was expanded with a laboratory for biohazard analyses.
  • Prof. Wojciech Budzyński was a laureate of the contest “Personality of the year 2012 in Warmia and Mazury”. The Professor was awarded by Warmia-Mazury Business Club in the category of science.
  • Prof. Małgorzata Chomicz, an artist and a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts, UWM, was awarded “Laurels for the bests among the bests” by the Marshall of Warmińsko-Mazurskie province.
  • Prof. Zygmunt Litwińczuk from the University of Life Sciences in Lublin was awarded the title of an Honorary Doctor of UWM.
  • UWM opened its 17th faculty –of Technical and Social Sciences in Ełk. At this faculty students can study Administration, as well as Geodesy and Cartography.
  • At the 112th International Invention Exhibition in Paris,  the Faculty of Medical Sciences UWM, together with the Clinical University Hospital in Olsztyn, were awarded the brown medal and a special award of distinction of the Biomedical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the NMFlowMetaAnalyser system.
  • The presidia of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, and of Polish Academy of Sciences held a debate at UWM on significant issues concerning higher education and science, i.e. financing scientific research from the EU funds.
  • Prof. Bronisław Sitek, the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration, was appointed as the President of the State Treasury Solicitors’ Office.
  • Three of the academics from the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management UWM – Prof. Paweł Wielgosz, Dr Eng. Radosław Baryła, and Prof. Marek Mróz – became members of the National Centre for Space an Satellite Engineering.
  • After the two-year renovation and modernization, the Old Boiler House was opened. It houses the Centre of Innovation and Technology Transfer, as well as the International Projects Centre.
  • The local government presented UWM with a fixed property called “Łyński Młyn” [Eng. “Watermill by the Łyna river”], which is located near the springs of the  Łyna. The property has 3,5 hectares of land with five buildings.
  • Prof. Bogdan Głuszczak and Prof. Stanisław Oszczak became Honorary Citizens of Olsztyn.
  • After the renovation and modernization, new buildings of the Clinical University Hospital in Olsztyn were officially handed over.
  • UWM opened the House of Tradition, which was situated in the University Library.
  • Prof. Jan Jankowski, the Head of the Chair of Poultry Science at the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering was awarded the title of an Honorary Doctor of Grodno State Agrarian University in Belarus.
  • Interactive fusion system of multiple 3D data won the Great Prize of the 62nd International Exhibition of Inventions, Research and New Technologies, “Brussels Innova”. Its inventors are: Prof. Jerzy Gielecki, the Head of the Chair of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr Anna Żurada, the vice-Dean for Didactics at the Faculty of MS, Dr Michał Chlebiej, and  Prof. Dr hab. Andrzej Rutkowski.
  • Dr hab. Eng. Wojciech Sobieski, UWM associate professor from the Chair of Mechanics and Building Structures at the Faculty of Technical Sciences received an award of Division Four of Polish Academy of Sciences.
  • Prof. Dr hab. Zbigniew Wieczorek from the Chair of Physics and Biophysics UWM, was appointed the President of the Polish Biophysical Society.
  • Dr hab. Przemysław Dąbrowski from the Chair of Law and  State Theory at the Faculty of Law and Administration won the Historical Award of the President of Olsztyn.
  • Dr Mariusz Antolak from the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture was chosen as the best tutor of a student club in the Polish competition held under the patronage of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
  • Clinical University Hospital in Olsztyn was awarded The Pearl of Medicine – a prize in a national medical contest – for innovations and high technologies in the field of medicine.

 

2012
• The University’s Swimming Pool together with the Centre for Aquaculture and Ecological Engineering was officially opened.
• Prof. Szczepan Figiel from the Faculty of Economic Sciences became a member of the Informatization Council acting at the Ministry of Administration and Digitalization.
• Dariusz Tanajewski, PhD student from the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management received a distinction in the ‘Scientific debut 2011’ contest organized by Jerzy Buzek’s Parliamentary Office.
• The Faculty of Biology transformed its hitherto existing name into the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology.
• The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries transformed its hitherto existing name into the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
• Prof. Dariusz Kucharczyk (together with a team of scientists from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences) was one of 5 polish scientists nominated in ‘Scientific Discovery of the Year 2011’ plebiscite.
• ‘Forbes’ published a prestigious list of ‘Diamonds of Forbes’ – the list of the fastest growing companies. The University was in the venerable body.
• The laureates of the St. Jacob award were:  Prof. Mirosław Krzemieniewski in the category of science, Prof. Marcin Wawruk in the category of culture and ENEJ for the particular merits for Olsztyn.
• Transformation of the External Teaching Center in Ełk into the Faculty of Technical and Social Sciences.
• Prof. Stanisław Czachorowski from the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology was among the laureates of 7th edition of the ‘Popularizer of Science’ plebiscite.
• Prof. Udo Arnold received a honorary doctorate degree of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
• Prof. Wiesław Pływaczewski, the Head of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Policy (the Faculty of Law and Administration) became a member of the National Institute of Museology and Collections Protection.
• The elections at the University. Prof. Ryszard Górecki was reelected for Rector for the years 2012-2016.
• Dr. Jolanta Fieducik (the Faculty of Technical Sciences) and M. Sc. Maria Siemionek (the Center of Foreign Languages) were in the final top 10 in the ‘Women of Success of Warmia and Mazury’ plebiscite.
• Users of ‘corobimy.net’ website defined ‘Kortowiada’ festival as the best students’ festival in Poland.
• Construction of the Road Engineering Laboratory  got off the ground.
• Prof. Dariusz Kucharczyk from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences was awarded ‘Personality of the Year 2011 of Warmia and Mazury’.
• The first Veterinary Portal in Poland was created at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
• Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences became a new President of Olsztyn’s Science Forum.
• The Centre for Evaluation of Animal Origin was opened at the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering.
• The University received extra funds for the new three ordered majors: Civil Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering and Informatics.
• The Faculty of Animal Bioengineering received a certificate of the highest quality for the field Zootechnics.
• Prof. Jan Kiciński and Prof. Janusz Gołaszewski were awarded by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland for the technical and scientific activities in 2011. The scope of research interest includes: renewable energy and its practical use.
• ‘Kortowiada’ festival was awarded in 8th edition of the ‘Best Product or Service of the Voivodeship’.

2011
• Director of many years of the Universities Library (currently the Vice-Director) Dr. Danuta Konieczna received the statuette of St. Jacob in the category of science.
• Warmia and Mazury the Business Club honored Prof. Jan Jankowski from the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering with the ‘Personality of the Year 2010 of Warmia and Mazury’ statuette.
• The Academic Business Incubator came into existence in Kortowo.
• The Faculty of Medical Science held the first in Poland ceremony of the White Gown which is intended for freshmen who started their medical practice.
• After an extensive modernization of the Laboratory in the Department of Husbandry of Goats and Sheeps at the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering was opened.
• The University took a second place in the contest organized by the Ministry of Regional Development in the category of the best investment’s promotion within the Operational Programme Development of Eastern Poland.
• Construction of the Regional IT Center came to the end. The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences was moved to the new seat.
• The University opened the Centre for Food Safety and Quality Control Food and Veterinarian Preventive Medicine.
• Kortowo campus was awarded with distinction by monthly ‘National Geographic Traveler’ in the national contest named ‘Polish 7 wonders of nature’.
• The Zootechnics field of study at the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering was announced by the Polish Accreditation Committee as the best zootechnical field of study in Poland.
• A team of scientists led by Prof. Dariusz Kucharczyk from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries was the first in Poland and one of the firsts in the world who brought about to spawning of European eels in artificial environment.
• Official opening of the Research-Education Centre for Dairy Technology.
• Jerzy Skolimowski and Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba received honorary doctorate degrees of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

2010
• Construction of the Regional IT Center got off the ground.
• Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, received a prestigious decoration ‘Meritus Pro Medicus’, established by the Supreme Medical Council.
• Prof. Stanisław Kamiński, the Head of the Department of Animal Genetics (the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering) and the University, as an institution particularly merit for development of Olsztyn became laureates of the St. Jacob award.
• Warmia and Mazury Business Club awarded Prof. Jan Kucharski from the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture the ‘Personality of the Year 2009 of Warmia and Mazury’.
• Prof. Jadwiga Wyszkowska, Vice-Rector for Students Affairs, was in the final top ten in the ‘Women of Success of Warmia and Mazury’ plebiscite.
• The Faculty of Fine Arts received entitlement to confer PhD titles in the artistic field of conducting.
• The Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, Bishop Bruno Platter, was a guest of a scientific conference devoted to the Order of Teutonic Knights, organized by the Institute of History and International Relations.
• Prof. Robert Wójcik from the Faculty of Technical Sciences and Dr. Arkadiusz Dudziak from the Faculty of Humanities were laureates of the Polish Foundation of the Opportunities Industrialization Centers "OIC Poland" contest in Lublin.
• The Environmental Protection’s specialization at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries was recognized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as an ordered specialization.
• The Faculty of Humanities received entitlement to confer habilitation in the field of Linguistics.
• The Institute of Fine Arts received the ‘Hieronim Skurpski Award of the President of Olsztyn’ in the field of Fine Arts.
• Prof. Ryszard Górecki, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, became the Vice-President of the Polish Academy of Science.
• Dr. Jolanta Piwowar from the Institute of Journalism and Communication at the Faculty of Humanities became the only Polish expert specialized in linguistic analyses.
• The Applied Mathematics’ specialization at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science took a second place in the ranking of all ordered specializations of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

2009
• The Faculty of Fine Arts came into existence.
• The University channel on You Tube was activated by TV Kortowo.
• Dr. Robert Wójcik from the Faculty of Technical Sciences received the Prime Minister of Infrastructure’s award for development and implementation of innovative methods of building drainage.
• Prof. Irina Dymnikowa, physicist from the Department of Relativistic Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences realized a scientific internship in CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research, Switzerland).
• The University took over 103rd Military Hospital located at Warszawska Street in Olsztyn. The University Hospital and Clinic were created.
• Prof. Aleksy Tralle was a laureate of St. Jacob award established in Olsztyn in the category of science.
• Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences was awarded ‘The Citizen of Olsztyn of the Year 2008’.
• Prof. Krystyna Demska-Zakęś, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Fisheries, Prof. Elżbieta Bandurska-Stankiewicz from the Faculty of Medical Sciences and M. Sc. Krystyna Spikert from the Faculty of Humanities were in the final top ten in the ‘Women of Success of Warmia and Mazury’ plebiscite.
• Dr. Piotr Grzymowicz, professor’s assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Technical Sciences was elected for the President of Olsztyn.
• ‘Złoty Laur’ of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was given to Günter Verheugen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry and Vice-President of the European Commission.

• The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was awarded as a Student Friendly University for the second time.
• The opening ceremony of the External Didactic Center located in Szczytno.

• The Faculty of Technical Sciences received entitlement to confer habilitation in the field of Agricultural Engineering.
• The official opening ceremony of a modern Laboratory of Mechatronics Basics at the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

• Prof. Lubomir Baran and ‘AZS UWM’ volleyball player Paweł Zagumny were laureates of the St. Jacob award.
• Prof. Andrzej Babuchowski became the Minister’s adviser, Coordinator of the Department for Agriculture and Fishing at the European Commission.
• French Ambassador in Poland Pierre Menat visited the UWM. The Embassy of France in Poland offered  a scholarship programme for students who want to study or do an internship in France.
• Prof. Ryszard Górecki was honored by the ‘Forbes’ magazine as the ‘Man of the Year’.
• Business Club of Warmia and Mazury awarded Prof. Stanisław Achremczyk and the Academic Choir the ‘Personality of the Year 2006 of Warmia and Mazury’.
• The Faculty of Theology received entitlement to confer habilitation in the field of Theology.

• The UWM and the Offenburg University signed an agreement to establish joint masters studies. Graduating students receive double-diplomas from both Universities.
• Prof. Jadwiga Przała and the volleyball team ‘AZS UWM’ were laureates of the St. Jacob award.
• Lithuanian Ambassador in Poland Egidijus Meilunas was a guest at the UWM.
• Election at the University. Prof. Ryszard Górecki was reelected for Rector for the years 2006-2008.
• Pro.f Jerzy Kasprzak (The Faculty of Law and Administration) was awarded by the Polish Forensic Association for developing a way to identify criminals by their auricles.

• The most modern poultry laboratory in Europe was opened at the Teaching and Research Station at the UWM in Bałdy.
