In academic year 2012/2013 University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn implements 4 projects under 7th Framework Programme of European Commision:

1. Project title: EUROpean multilevel integrated BIOREFinery design for sustainable biomass processing

Acronim: "EUROBIOREF"

Objective:

The development and implementation of bio-refinery processes is an absolute necessity and the key to meet the vision towards bio-based economy. The EuroBioRef concept is an integrated, sustainable and diversified bio-refinery involving all biomass value chain stakeholders. The latter will allow large-scale research, testing, optimisation and demonstration of processes in the production of a wide range of products with the dual aim to use all fractions of various biomasses and exploit their potential to produce the highest value possible in an eco-efficient and sustainable way. Moreover, the project attempts to overcome the efforts fragmentation of the whole biomass value chain requiring greater networking, coordination and cooperation among a large variety of actors from biochemical and chemical industry, SMEs, scientific knowledge chain, and European organisations.

The new concept will adopt a flexible and a modular process design adapted to large- but also small-scale production units easier to install in various European areas. The overall efficiency of this approach will clearly exceed existing pathways and will consider sustainable options in order to:
- Produce and use a high diversity of sustainable biomasses adapted for European regions
- Produce high specific energy bio-jet fuels (42 MJ/kg)

- Produce multiple products (chemicals, polymers, materials) in a flexible and optimised way that take advantage of the differences in biomass components and intermediates
- Improve cost-efficiency by 30% through improved reaction and separation effectiveness, reduced capital investments, improved plant and feedstock flexibility, reduction of production time and logistics
- Reduce by 30% the energy

- Produce zero waste and rationalise use of raw materials

The impact of the project in terms of environment, social and economic benefits is important and could give a serious advantage for European bio-industry.

2. Project title: Agriculture and Energy Efficiency

Acronim: "AGREE"

Objective:

Until now energy efficiency in agriculture has received little attention, except for energy use in greenhouses. Nevertheless, it is considerable, especially when indirect energy use is taken into account. AGREE has the objective of showing the potential of short term energy efficiency gains and the promise of the long term potential. Environmental effects of savings on direct and indirect energy use in agriculture are integrally considered, as energy use efficiency also implies reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Because energy savings in agriculture depend highly on the agri-environment (climate), AGREE will bring together south-eastern, south-western, north-eastern and north-western agro-production systems. Evidence from energy saving potential and corresponding environmental and economical effects on country level are brought to the transnational level to identify an agenda for transnational collaboration to increase the learning curve on energy use efficiency.

AGREE will set up a participatory process for two reasons:

1. Stakeholders will be involved in the set-up of the agenda which will facilitate
the implementation of the results.

2. AGREE needs the opinions and views of stakeholders to produce an agenda that reflects the needs of and opportunities by practice.

To ensure implementation, a link has been created with a European network of researchers committed to adopt the issue. This network (ENGAGE) is closely associated with the European Society of Agricultural Engineers (EuAgEng). This link will facilitate the adoption process.

To ensure that the results will create relevant and effective R&D programmes, AGREE has established a close link with the Collaborative Working Group on Agriculture and Energy. This group is embedded in SCAR and the KBBE-Net and is thus positioned to translate the AGREE agenda, into commitment for effective R&D on energy efficiency. To this end, it is important that AGREE provides evidence of the added value of such research.

 

3. Project title: Development of an automatic irrigation and fertilization system

Acronim: "OPTIFERT"

 Objective:

Due to climate related changes, longer dry periods for European farmers and without irrigation the risk of a volatile harvests will rise, that is the reason for a tendency across
Europe to irrigate fields. The need for innovative irrigated systems is to minimize water consumption and costs. Also in times of limited water the project will be lucrative.
There are more and more increasing cost pressures like costs of water, energy and fertilizer, environmental legislation and requirements, cuts of subsidies, high personal costs etc. The project will help to save a huge amount of money by reducing the mentioned investments.
The tendency to automatic systems in the agriculture is rising and in future farmers will do most of their regulating by a computer. The system will support the farmers to realize their work by modern technology. Furthermore the project minimizes the pollution of groundwater by reducing fertilizer to a limit and concerns of eutrophication will be decreased. The aim of the project is to develop a fully automatic irrigation and fertilisation system (with needs based fertilizer spreading) in order to help farmers to monitor and control their water and fertilizer consumption. That basically means we want to combine the irrigation and fertilization in one step. Furthermore, the system will diagnose the need of the plants with the help of sensors and the interpretation of terrestrial meteorological data. The system consists of a combined sensor-detector-dosage system, which includes a monitoring, control and distribution unit which enables the dosing and distribution of the water and the fertilizer.

 

4. Project title: Games, Research, Experiments and Ecology Night

Acronim: "GREENNIGHT"

Objective:

Warmia and Mazury is a region of unique nature and landscape values, a land of biological diversity, the purest air in Poland and unpolluted water. It is called the Land of One Thousand Lakes and is definitely a part of European nature heritage. There are 9 landscape parks in our Voivodeship, many nature reserves and nature monuments, an ecological network of Nature 2000 areas, and numerous areas protected according to the Ramsar Convention. The region was chosen one of 5 most precious and most beautiful European sites that were among the finalists competing to become New 7 Wonders of Nature (in a competition organized by a Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation last year). However, ecological awareness of the inhabitants of this region is low. The region is rather poor, with a high unemployment rate and sometimes profitable, although not environment-friendly activities prevail. That is why, this year Researchers' Night is aimed not only at bringing researchers and research closer to people, showing a fascinating side of science and building science-awareness but also at building eco-awareness of the inhabitants of the region. This year the emphasis will be on natural science and a role of research and researchers in preserving the landscape, creating ecological energy sources etc.

 

The main aim of the Researchers' Night is:

-increasing awareness concerning a role of science, life and work of researchers and possibilities and benefits of a scientific career

Diversified awareness, educational and artistic activities of the project, intended for participants of all age groups, using experience and resources of many partners, taking advantage of modern technologies, interactive character of the events, which are educational and entertaining at the same time, and locating the activities in 7 sites in Warmia and Mazury Voivodeship as well as cooperation with other organizers of Researchers' Night 2012 enabled the organizers to achieve the goals of the project. Around 30.000 people were direct participants of the Researchers' Night events. Many of them took part in more than one event. The number of people who found out about GREEN Night was about 500.000.
