University
The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established on September 1, 1999 (Journal of Laws No. 69 of August 20, 1999, item 762). The University combines a 50-year tradition of the University of Agriculture and Technology, a 30-year tradition of the Higher Teacher Education School and a 450-year tradition of theological education in Warmia.
The University employs over 2 950 persons, including 1 830 academic teachers, of which 217 hold the title of professor and 250 - the postdoctoral degree (doctor habilitated). 14 faculties provide education to over 40 000 students, including 26 560 full-time students, 13 469 part-time students, 526 doctoral students and 3 100 postgraduate students.
The students are offered the possibility to acquire extensive knowledge in the following fields: Liberal Arts, Pedagogy, Theology, Law, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Technology, Biology, Economy and Mathematics. They can choose from among 39 or 31 majors in the system of full-time and part-time studies respectively. More than 4 000 full-time students and 2 500 part-time students graduate from the University each year.
The teaching quality and degree programs offered by the University are subject to evaluation by the State Accreditation Committee as well as by "environmental" accreditation committees. The following fields of study have been granted teaching quality certificates by the State Accreditation Committee: the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering - Animal Husbandry (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Biology - Biology (master's degree program and vocational program), Biotechnology (uniform master's degree program); the Faculty of the Humanities - Journalism and Social Communication (vocational program), Polish Philology (master's degree program and vocational program), Political Science (master's degree program); the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science - Information Technology (vocational program), Mathematics (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Food Sciences - Food Technology and Human Nutrition (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Geodesy and Land Management - Geodesy and Cartography (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Technical Sciences - Building Engineering (vocational program), Agricultural Engineering and Forestry (uniform master's degree program), Mechanics and Machine Design (first-degree program, second-degree program and uniform master's degree program); the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Arts - Art Education (master's degree program), Music Education (master's degree program); the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture - Horticulture (master's degree program and vocational program), Environmental Protection (master's degree program and vocational program), Agriculture (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Environmental Protection and Fisheries Sciences - Fisheries Management (master's degree program and vocational program), Environmental Protection (master's degree program and vocational program); the Faculty of Theology - Theology (master's degree program); the Faculty of Economic Sciences - Management and Marketing (vocational program); the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Veterinary Medicine (master's degree program); the Higher Seminaries in Ełk, Elbląg and Pieniężno - Theology (master's degree program and vocational program); the Educational Center in Rusocin - Agricultural Engineering and Forestry (first-degree program); the Faculty of Law and Administration - Administration (first-degree program). Nursing has been positively evaluated by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education. Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering and Forestry, Food Technology and Human Nutrition, Environmental Protection, and Animal Husbandry have received accreditation by the Accreditation Committee for Agricultural Universities. Biology, Biotechnology, English Philology, Polish Philology, Classical Studies, History, Environmental Protection (at two Faculties), Fisheries Management, Pedagogy and Theology have obtained accreditation certificates issued by the University Accreditation Committee. According to the European Commission of the Association of Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, the degree programs offered at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UWM in Olsztyn satisfy the European education standards. Among 120 faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Europe, only 38 (including the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UWM in Olsztyn) have received a positive evaluation by the European Commission.
The University is an autonomous institution of higher education. Out of 14 Faculties, eight enjoy full academic rights, which means that they are authorized to grant postdoctoral (doctor habilitated) and doctoral degrees. 11 Faculty Councils are entitled to confer the doctoral degree in 15 disciplines.
Although its main role is to provide education, the University of Warmia and Mazury is also a cultural and sports center. There are many cultural agencies at the University. The most popular among them are: the Professor Wiktor Wawrzyczek Choir, the Folk Dance Group "Kortowo", the Student Theater "CEZAR", the Scuba Diving Club "Skorpena", and the Student Photographic Agency "Jamnik". Our students are also successful sportsmen. The men's volleyball team PZU AZS is currently the vice-champion of Poland. Our students have also won gold, silver and bronze medals in taekwondo, yachting and athletics in the Polish championships. The students of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn entered the 21st century with the necessary knowledge and qualifications, ready to attain the most ambitious goals and to realize their dreams.
Most of the research/teaching facilities and student dormitories are located in the district of Olsztyn-Kortowo, which forms a university campus. The Kortowo campus has a highly developed infrastructure, including modern laboratories, lecture halls, research and recreation facilities and a housing estate - managed by the Student Aid Foundation "ŻAK". The campus is one of the most beautifully located academic centers in Poland.
