If nothing interferes with the construction schedule, students of both the Faculty of Law and Administration and the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn will attend their classes in modern lecture halls and laboratories in the new building three years from now. Prof. Jerzy Przyborowski, Rector of the University of Warmia and Mazury, laid the cornerstone and the foundation act for the construction of the common building for both faculties on 2 October in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Science, Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, and the deans of both faculties. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Ryszard Górecki, the rector for the 2016-2020 term of office, the initiator of the construction.
- It has taken several years, but the conditions for studying and working for 4.5 thousand students and almost 450 academic teachers are finally about to improve. The project has waited to be approved for long enough. Had it not been for the initiative of the rector, Prof. Ryszard Górecki, the construction would not have passed the planning stage. During the meetings at the rector's college, we made various efforts to get this investment started - said Rector Prof. J. Przyborowski.
The University has been striving to build a modern home for the two faculties since 2008. However, it could not have initiated such a massive investment without financial support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Initially, the cost of the construction was estimated at 36 million PLN, and ultimately amounted to 72 million PLN. UWM received a grant from the Ministry in the amount of 16 million PLN.
- I would like to thank Minister Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz for his decision to subsidize our investment. This support allowed for quick progress of work, as can be seen on-site, and I hope that on 1 October 2023, we will celebrate the delivery of the completed building," concluded Rector Prof. J. Przyborowski.
Prof. Joanna Ostrouch-Kamińska, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Prof. Jarosław Dobkowski, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration are among those particularly pleased with the investment. Until the completion of the construction works, the employees and students of the Faculty of Law and Administration will enjoy the hospitality of the Faculty of Humanities.
-It is a major event in the history of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The long-awaited new premises for students, doctoral students and employees is being rapidly erected. Today's ceremony has generated a lot of positive energy. We are more than pleased! Our dreams are becoming reality - states Dean Prof. J. Ostrouch-Kamińska.
The construction began this April and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. The new building for both faculties is being built on the Kortowo campus, at the junction of Warszawska and Dybowskiego Streets. The Budimex company serves as the primary contractor.
The building will offer over 12.5 thousand m2 of space. Each faculty will be assigned over 2 thousand m2 for its own purposes. The remaining space will be shared. The elevation, partially finished with clinker brick cladding, will aim to reflect the historical architecture of the old section of Kortowo, but also to complement the newer buildings. Apart from lecture halls, the building will also house: a courtroom, a theatre-type training hall, a kindergarten room, a speech therapy room, a practical and technical workshop room, a music room and a forensic laboratory.
