The success of AZS UWM sailors at the World Cup

Tomasz Januszewski and Jacek Nowak – sailors of AZS UWM – won the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final contested in Abu Dhabi, racing in the Olympic class “49-er”.

The final gathered representatives of all Olympic classes – in total 270 competitors from 38 countries. Tomasz Januszewski and Jacek Nowak were invited to compete among 21 contestants of “49-er” class. The regattas in Abu Dhabi are exceptional mainly due to the limited number of competitors. Invitations to the Final were received only by the athletes who were the best at the other six sport events contested within the World Cup cycle in: Chinese Qingdao, Australian Melbourne, American Miami, Spanish Majorca, and French Hyeres.

 – We were confident about our skills, but the previous results did not satisfy us. The craving for victory grew more and more intense. At the Regattas we achieved what we wanted. We are absolutely satisfied. This contest was the most important to us – they admitted after the Final.

After the third place at the prestigious Kieler Woche in Germany, this is the greatest success of our athletes. Their main goal now is to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The silver medal at the World Cup in Abu Dhabi was won by Carlos Paz and Paz Blanco from Spain, and the brown medal went to John Pink and Stuart Bithell from Great Britain.

The athletes from Kortowo not only won 10.000 USD, but they were also given interesting nick names. Because of their distinctive T-shirts, Tomasz and Jacek are now known as Captain America and Superman.
