General information for incoming students

Every incoming student has an opportunity to be accommodated in one of the student houses (dormitories). Dormitories are situated in Kortowo (a campus that belongs to the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn).

All student houses have an access to the Internet (remember to take the cable Internet!), as well as a TV room, study room and sport room. Electricity, heating and water fees are included in the rent for the room.

To be accommodated you will need: Identity Card and ID photo. You are also obligated to pay for the first month of your stay and deposit fee in the amount of 300 PLN – you will receive this money back when you move out, unless there are some damages in your room.

Room reservation is made by the Office for International Cooperation. If you are interested in living in one of the dormitories please write this information in the gap ”additional information” in Application Form and send it together with the rest of your application documents.

Insurance and Student Card

Each exchange student is obliged to posses health insurance. For EU/EFTA citizens European Health Insurance Card is required. The students from non-EU/EEA countries should purchase health insurance in their home country, before departure. According to state health regulations foreigners (except the EU/EEA citizens, see above) have to pay for a medical consultation. The cost is then reimbursed by the health insurance company. Apart from academic and public medical care system there is also a well-developed private sector. The costs of private medical care may be reimbursed if a student has purchased a health insurance policy in his/her country before departure.

For non EU/EFTA citizens (e.g. Turkey) a private health insurance is necessary. Make sure that the agreement with insurance company ensures reimbursement of costs of treatment abroad.

Student Card

The Student Card of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn entitles to discounts of 50% for public transport and demonstrates all rights that students of our university posses. We need one photograph of a student in order to prepare it. The card is issued several days upon registration at the Dean Office. The student can not use student tickets without mentioned student card. In this case a normal ticket should be purchased.

Legalization of stay/ Visa

An EU citizen can enter Poland with his/her ID document (a valid travel document e.g. passport, or another document certifying his/her identity and citizenship).

For stay up to 3 months no legalisation of stay will be necessary. For stays exceeding 3 months, an EU citizen will have to obtain a temporary residence permit (Karta pobytu obywatela UE). In case of students, the residence permit is issued for one year. The residence permit – once issued – will also entitle its bearer to take up work. The residence permit and the right to work also extends to the immediate family – i.e. spouse and children.

This document will be issued by the Department of Citizens Affairs of the Voivodeship Office (province administration, in Polish Urząd Wojewódzki).

Temporary Residence Card will allow you to cross the Polish border as many times as you wish.

Note: In order to prolong your stay, you need to apply for a Temporary Stay Card 45 days before your visa expires.

Students coming from the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) have no need to apply for a visa. A valid travel document entitles students to enter Poland.

The citizens of non-EU/EEA member countries are required to obtain a Polish visa upon their arrival to Poland.  We recommend you to apply for the visa three months in advance.
