Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the Chair of Food Biochemistry at the Faculty of Food Science, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

Our University was founded on 1st October, 1999 and it is the newest, fourteenth university in Poland. It was formed as a result of uniting three higher schools: the Academy of Agriculture and Technology - a higher school of more than 50 years' tradition, the Higher Pedagogical School - which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, and the Warmia Theological Institute, founded in 1980.3bio

The University is a higher school that enjoys a full academic autonomy. It results from its scientific potential expressed by the authority to grant the degree of habilitated doctor in 13 fields and the degree of doctor in 22 scientific disciplines.

We currently educate students at 16 faculties and 59 majors including three interdisciplinary studies of full-time studies and 39 majors of extramural studies. The total number of students exceeds 34,000. Full-time and extramural courses are conducted at the engineer (Bachelor), Master, post-graduate and doctoral levels.

The Faculty of Food Sciences is one of the most important faculties of the University. It distinguishes itself by the quality of research, cooperation with domestic and foreign scientific centres and industry, and by the development of the scientific staff. The Faculty staff are members and sit on boards of many scientific societies, such as the Polish Society of Microbiologists, Polish Biochemical Society, Polish Society of Food Technologists, International Union of Food Science and Technology, European Society for Photobiology, Committee for Food Technology and Chemistry at the Polish Academy of Sciences, and others. The Faculty has full academic authority to grant scientific degrees of doctor of agricultural sciences and habilitated doctor of agricultural sciences in the discipline of food technology and human nutrition.okladka_eng

The Chair of Food Biochemistry was established in 1966. Currently 10 research and didactic staff, including 3 titular professors, 1 habilitated doctor and 4 doctors as well as 4 engineering and technical staff, are employed by the Chair. Also 3 post-graduate students doing their research in our Chair.

In the Chair research in the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, food technology, enzymology, proteomics, peptidomics and bioinformatics (mainly molecular bases of the function and structure of molecules, fractal analysis of hydrocolloids, food proteins as a source of bioactive peptides, use of bioinformatics tools in proteins (and their hydrolysates) and peptides analysis) are carried out.

We cooperate with many scientific institutes in Poland and abroad. The staff of the Chair have significant scientific achievements, they are authors or coauthors of many books (written in polish and in English), academic scripts, scientific papers and proceedings and they are members of many organizations and scientific societies. The BIOPEP – database of proteins and bioactive peptides as well as allergenic proteins and their epitopes is available on our website.

We aim at implementing our scientific achievements in industry and uniting the theory with
practical application.

We hope that this elaboration will enable you to get to know the University, Faculty, and first of all, our Chair.
